Courses taught in English
Some courses in English are available in business administration, literature (American, English, comparative), law, political science, philosophy, and geology. Icelandic studies courses in English include Icelandic language, literature, history, culture and politics. A
one-year program in earth sciences designed specifically for international students focuses on geology, geography, and geophysics; regional excursions are offered. ISEP participants may also be able to arrange special tutorials with professors and give exams or another form of assessment in English to complement their studies.
Academic Notes
Please note: the engineering and science faculties are taught in Icelandic (except a few geology courses), even though information is available on the university's website in English.
Language Notes
The principal language of instruction is Icelandic. Textbooks are mainly in English and Icelandic. Some departments offer some courses in English and allow foreign students to take their examinations in English.

Academic year or semester one exchanges only. Academic year: early September to late May; Semester 1: late August/ early September to December.
Housing and Meals
Icelandic Student Services operate the student dormitories, both for individuals and for couples. However, since the demand for rooms at the dormitories far exceeds the supply, many students rent rooms elsewhere. The Office of International Education assists ISEP students in finding housing, either in student dormitories or on the private market.
Profile
The University of Iceland is a state university founded in 1911. The university provides instruction for some 5,700 students studying in nine faculties. In addition to the major faculties there are numerous research institutes attached to the university. The University of Iceland is the largest single workplace in the country.
Location
The University of Iceland is located in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík. The University is within walking distance of the city center. The city is situated in the southwestern part of the country. The climate is mild. Cultural life flourishes: a range of activities is offered, including concerts, theaters, galleries and cinemas. It is especially famous for its swimming pools. Reykjavík is about one hour from the Keflavik International Airport by car.
