Courses
One year or semester exchange students are able to take any courses from our two colleges: APS (Asia Pacific Studies) and APM (Asia Pacific Management). APS is focused on Social Sciences, Media and languages while APM concentrates on Business Administration, Finance and Accounting. APU will offer special interdisciplinary clusters of courses featuring, International Strategy Studies, Tourism and Hospitality, Language and Culture, Heath, Environment and Life sciences, and Information, Computer and Technology. Courses can be taken in either Japanese or English.
APU also offers the following language courses: Chinese, Korean, Malay-Indonesian, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese. Those interested must apply at the Academic Office at APU.
Special Academic Conditions
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Special ISEP Application Instructions
Students should submit a Language Proficiency Report for Japanese, even if no Japanese has been taken. Exchange space typically fills during the February placement round; students should apply for spring semester programs by February 1.
Language Notes
Japanese language courses are offered in addition to regular classes during the semester for intermediate to advanced levels.
I-to-I applicants who are not native English speakers must submit a minimum official or institutional TOEFL score of 550 or equivalent.
Program Dates
Academic year: March-February; Semester 1: March-August; Semester 2: September-February. APU uses a quarter system (approximately two months in length) with each semester divided into two parts. Full year students can follow the US academic calendar and begin in September and end in August; or they can follow the Japanese calendar and begin in March and end in August.

Housing and Meals
Students are generally placed in AP House (the student dormitory), home to several hundred APU international and Japanese students. Each student is allocated a private room complete with toilet, sink, air conditioner, bed, and refrigerator. In addition, residents can make use of Japanese-style rooms, meeting rooms, 24-hour computer rooms, and a host of other facilities. Students have the option of cooking in the dormitory communal kitchens or eating at the cafeteria on campus.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) opened in April 2000 with freedom, peace and humanism as its basic ideals. Currently, there are approximately 5000 students, almost half of whom are from 75 nations and regions outside Japan. APU offers a dual language education in Japanese and English, with most academic subjects for first- and second-year students given in both languages. The two colleges at APU, Asia Pacific Studies (APS) and Asia Pacific Management (APM), and the Graduate schools allow students to study the Asia Pacific region from various perspectives with the Crossover Advanced Program (CAP) offering inter-disciplinary specialized studies. APU's international student body and teaching faculty are dedicated to fostering greater understanding of the Asia Pacific region among the peoples of the world, continuing to attract attention as the standard bearer of international education in Japan.
Location
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University is located in Beppu, the second largest city in Oita prefecture and home to the world's second largest outflow of Hot Springs (onsen). There is plenty to explore in Beppu, with its spectacular natural scenery and old-style Japanese architecture. The picturesque backstreets surrounding the onsen are the perfect location for a walk to explore the nearby shrines, old shops and other historic spots. Fukuoka, Kyushu's largest city, is located northwest of Oita Prefecture and can be reached in approximately two hours by highway bus.
