Profile
The University of Rennes began in the medieval period with the creation of the Breton University. The actual statutes comes from the 1968 reform when the former university split into two new universities: Rennes 1 and Rennes 2. The University of Rennes 1 welcomes 22,567 students (including 2,352 from abroad). It is a multidisciplinary institution consisting of three large fields: Science and Technology (10,566 students), Health Science (4,314 students), and Social Science (7,687 students).

In Rennes, the university is split into three major campuses with all facilities and it also has several departments outside of Rennes, in Britanny. Three sections of the university library (B.U.) cater to three educational and research areas on the different campuses: law, economics and management science; health; and sciences. There is also a Center of European Documentation at the Faculty of Law & Political Science.

Location
Rennes, the capital of Brittany, is a lively city with 300,000 inhabitants (including the main suburbs). The architecture shows various aspects in connection with the history of the city: medieval, 18th century, and modern style. Rennes also has a thriving automobile industry and is a center for computing and telecommunications research and development. It is also a cultural capital and the city has an opera, concert halls and theaters. In addition, it hosts an annual film festival and internationally known rock festival. The student population of the city is around 60,000.

Its central position in Brittany allows easy access to the beaches and places of interest on the north coast (Le Mont Saint Michel and Saint Malo are less than an hour's drive away) as well as the Atlantic coast. Brittany is also only a two hours' ride from Paris on the TVG, a high-speed train.
