Going to the UK on my own has taught me so much about independence and life. I couldn’t have learned all this unless I had taken the leap and gone through ISEP. -Rebecca Soland, 04-05

Hints for Researching Courses
From the alphabetical list of departments, click on your field of study. This shows general information about the structure of the department, as well as specific module (class) titles if available. If a department does not list specific module titles or descriptions, students may need to be flexible in their module selection and finalize their choices upon arrival. All modules are subject to scheduling and availability. Please note the online course catalog is currently out of date so students should consult Strathclyde departmental websites for the most accurate information.

Academic Notes
Fields that are particularly strong include Mechanical Engineering, Business, Literature, History, and more.

Special ISEP Application Instructions
1) Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered for ISEP-Exchange. Students applying for ISEP-Direct must have a minimum GPA of 2.75, unless they are applying to study Business or Engineering, in which case a 3.0 is required.

2) When requesting courses, all applicants should choose courses from the SAME primary academic department (as opposed to a sampling of subjects in two, three, or four different departments). This enables Strathclyde advisors to link each applicant with an appropriate academic advisor in that department, allows professors to be more in-the-know about international students’ arrival and presence in their class(es), and students, in turn, are better connected within a university faculty from the start of the program. It also enables swifter application processing so students can get their confirmations of place quicker. Students WILL still be able to enroll in courses from more than one department if they would like to study a combination of major requirements, general education requirements, or electives during the same semester. In fact, there is a great deal of flexibility. However, for the application admissions process, students are asked to restrict their choices to the most important subject. Elective subjects may be enrolled in upon arrival at Strathclyde, subject to timetabling and availability.

3) Fall semester applicants who desire to seek early exams or alternative assessment in order to return home from Scotland in December must indicate this at the bottom of their Course Request List in the application. Otherwise, there may not be enough time to make the proper arrangements and students may need to stay until January for exams.

Language Notes
Multilateral applicants who are not native English speakers must submit a minimum TOEFL of 600 (250 CBT).

Program Dates
Academic year: mid-September to early June; Semester 1: mid-September to December/January; Semester 2: January to early June. Fall semester students may request alternative assessment to enable them to finish their studies in December, but this is at the discretion of the individual department depending on various factors including the nature of the course (see application instructions above).

Housing and Meals
Students are housed in single room self-catering flats (apartments) on the John Anderson Campus. Each flat houses six students who have access to a communal kitchen and lounge. A meal stipend is provided for exchange students.

Profile
The University of Strathclyde has a long tradition of excellence. The university's reputation for high academic and research standards has led to extensive collaboration with industry and with educational institutions throughout the world. Strathclyde is Scotland's third largest university with 13,000 students.

Location
The University of Strathclyde is situated in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom. Glasgow is a fantastic city—perhaps a bit more urban and gritty compared with lovely Edinburgh (less than an hour away by train), but still beautiful, vibrant, and very cosmopolitan. Among other things, the city offers opportunities to enjoy art, shopping, music, sports, traditional Scottish fare and nearly any other type of ethnic cuisine, as well as “enough pubs to go to a different one every day of the year.” In particular, Glasgow is home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The Burrell Collection, a wonderful display of art objects from across the world, and the Gallery of Modern Art, set in the neo-classical elegance of the former Royal Exchange, are both havens for culture lovers. By their own admission, Glaswegians are curious, kind, intensely proud of their city, and eager to tell visitors all about it.

The Strathclyde campus is knit into the very center of town, which makes for an exciting living experience. Although the area is quite hilly, the academic buildings and residences are still conveniently close together for students to walk between. Two main train stations are easily accessible, as are buses and the underground. Glasgow is approximately 450 miles from London and can easily be reached by air (one hour flight) or train (five hours). The discount airline Ryanair also links Glasgow to other hubs throughout Europe for a very inexpensive price.
